BLM Resources

This post is a little bit different but I thought it might be useful to provide some resources for black lives matter. Just because something isn't currently trending, it doesn't mean the issue doesn't exist anymore. The amount of oppression that African Americans have and still continue to face, not only in the criminal justice system, is immeasurable. Please contact me if you have any other suggestions.

Now is the time to listen and educate ourselves so I’ve listed some books and movies that I found pretty informative:

The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness by Michelle Alexander

The Color of Law: A Forgotten History of How Our Government Segregated America by Richard Rothstein

(this book includes a lot of legalese and is pretty wordy, so if that's not an effective way for you to digest information I suggest looking at the other ones. That being said, this book is very informative and helped me understand the connection between how historical segregation has led to modern segregation)

Stamped from the Beginning by Ibram X. Kendi

Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria? By Beverly Daniel Tatum

Movies

13th

Slavery by Another Name

Final note: If you’ve felt distanced from what’s going on or are unsure how to articulate your thoughts on these issues, it’s okay! It’s never late to listen and open yourself up to being educated. Remember no one is perfect and it's always better to do something than nothing:)
